Action FiguresThese are in fact still lifes — but using my children’s Barbies and action figurines as subject matter. They had stopped playing with them so I began. As I worked I noticed, almost as an afterthought, that these compositions had ceased to be ‘still’ and had become dynamic. The figurines were creating a kind of operatic tension on the tablecloth, with the glasses and salt-shakers transforming into theatre sets. I think it no accident that the viewpoints to these scenes are elevated, as if it from a balcony in an opera house, or as an angry sky-god might see them, looking down from his cloud.
