Civil RightsSomeone asked me recently why I was painting this subject, and though I wasn’t sure at first, the answer now leapt to my mind: “Why had it taken me so long to get around to it?” A more relevant answer would be that I find the ambiguity contained in these images compelling. Our habit of pre-judging based on association and circumstance is deeply ingrained. Those faces staring out at us from the mug-shots tell us nothing about the person other than he or she had been arrested. And we forget that.
